The best things to discuss with your Haven butler are services that can make your suite experience more personal, including in-suite dining, preferred snacks, coffee delivery, pillows, ice, and assistance with special occasions. Butler service is included with every Haven suite, but some food, beverages, pressing, decorations, and special requests may carry additional charges. Always ask what is included before confirming a request.
Key Takeaways: What to Discuss With Your Haven Butler
- Every Haven suite includes 24-hour butler service, per Norwegian’s official Haven page. The butler’s time is included. What the butler brings is not always complimentary.
- Haven and Suites guests are exempt from Norwegian’s room service convenience charge, but a 20 percent gratuity and beverage service charge applies to non-complimentary beverages and special occasion items.
- Every item below is labeled Included, Possible charge, or Ask first, so you know which conversation you are having before you pick up the phone.
- Giving notice gives your butler the best opportunity to accommodate a request, although availability, ship operations and staffing mean not every request can be guaranteed.
- As a general starting point, requests involving your suite go to the butler, while dining reservations, shore excursions, entertainment, priority access and disembarkation planning go to the concierge. Spa, casino and medical needs remain with their respective departments.
- Norwegian’s 2026 onboard service charge is $25.00 per person, per day for The Haven and suites, and none of it goes directly to your butler.
- In our Haven at Sea community poll, 85 percent of respondents tipped their butler $20 to $29 per day. That is a community figure, not an official rate.
Most first-time Haven guests use very little of the butler service available to them, because they are unsure what is appropriate to request. That is the gap this post is meant to close. What follows is a working list of 25 things to discuss with your Haven butler, each one labeled so you can tell the difference between a courtesy, a conversation, and a charge.
I am Mike Nelson, and I specialize in Norwegian Cruise Line and The Haven. This list combines what Sue and I have learned from our own Haven sailings with questions, ideas, and experiences shared by members of our Haven at Sea community. It is the companion piece to our longer explainer on what a Haven butler actually does. If you are still deciding whether The Haven is worth booking, start with our complete guide to The Haven by Norwegian and come back once you have a suite number.

Quick Answers: What to Ask Your Haven Butler
For voice search, skimmers, and people reading this in an airport boarding line.
What can you ask your Haven butler for?
You can discuss anything that happens inside your suite, including in-suite dining, snacks, beverages, pillows, ice, pressing and celebration arrangements. Butler service itself is included with your Haven fare. Some of the items involved may still carry a charge.
Is it rude to ask your Haven butler for things?
No, and butlers consistently say the opposite. A butler with no direction has no way to personalize your week. The polite version of asking is simply to ask early and to check what a request costs before confirming it.
How much notice does a Haven butler need?
Simple requests like ice, pillows or extra towels usually take minutes. In-suite dining and celebration arrangements benefit from as much notice as you can give. Special dietary requests go through Norwegian at least 45 days before sailing.
Can your Haven butler bring food from any restaurant?
Often yes, and your butler can usually arrange dishes from the Haven Restaurant, the main dining rooms and in many cases specialty venues. Specialty cover charges still apply. Availability varies by ship, by venue and by how busy the evening is.
Does everything a Haven butler brings come free?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Butler service is included, but specialty dining cover charges, non-complimentary beverages, pressing in most categories, celebration items and corkage may all still apply. Ask what is included before you confirm.
What should you tell your Haven butler on the first day?
Tell them what you drink, what snacks you prefer, which mornings you would like breakfast in the suite, and any occasion you are celebrating. Remind your butler of any allergies or dietary requirements that you previously submitted to Norwegian.
Add your pillow preference. Five minutes covers a lot.
How to Read This List
Three labels appear on every one of the 25 items below. They exist because “the butler can arrange it” and “it is free” are two different statements, and conflating them is how people end up surprised by an onboard account.
Included
Your butler’s assistance or delivery does not carry a separate butler fee, and the item itself is normally complimentary in Haven and Suites categories.
Possible Charge
The food, beverage, pressing, decoration or service involved may cost extra. The butler coordinating it does not change that.
Ask First
Availability, suite category and ship policy vary. This is a conversation to have before you commit, not a request to fire off by phone.
One piece of context worth having up front. Per Norwegian’s room service FAQ, a convenience charge of up to $9.95 applies to room service orders fleetwide, plus a $4.95 room service breakfast fee, and orders placed by guests sailing in Haven and Suites staterooms are not subject to that service fee. The same page notes that a 20 percent gratuity and beverage service charge is added for non-complimentary beverages and special occasion items.
That one paragraph explains most of the labels below.
Before You Ask for Anything: The Day One Setup

Your butler will introduce themselves within an hour or two of boarding. Most guests say “we are all set, thank you,” which is understandable and also the moment the week gets less personal, because a butler without direction has to guess.
Instead, use the introduction to cover your preferences and to ask what your suite category includes. Some preferences can be set as standing requests so you are not calling daily. Availability and selections vary by ship and sailing, so treat it as a conversation rather than an order.
Then use the phone. On Prima and Prima Plus class ships there is a dedicated butler button in the suite, which is exactly as satisfying to press as it sounds. Nobody has ever been judged for pressing it.

Food and Drink: The Requests Worth Making
1. Balcony Breakfast With Full Table Service

Included.
Your butler can arrange breakfast served in the suite or on the balcony, and Haven and Suites guests are not subject to the room service breakfast fee that applies elsewhere on the ship.
Ask the evening before. A sea day morning is the easiest to accommodate, because the whole ship is not trying to get ashore at the same time. It is the request Haven at Sea members mention most often when they talk about what made the suite feel worth it.
2. Dinner From a Specialty Restaurant, Served in Your Suite

Possible charge.
Your butler can often arrange dishes from specialty venues to be served in your suite. The specialty restaurant cover charge or à la carte pricing still applies exactly as it would in the venue.
Availability varies by ship, by restaurant and by how busy the evening is, and some venues are easier than others. Ask in the morning rather than at the moment you get hungry, and confirm the cost before you order.
3. Embarkation Night Dinner in the Suite
Included.
Embarkation day can feel busy after traveling, boarding, unpacking and learning your way around the ship. An in-suite dinner may provide a quiet alternative on your first evening.
Discuss it with your butler shortly after boarding, since you are not aboard the night before. Availability and menu choices may be more limited on embarkation day than they will be later in the sailing.
4. A Standing Afternoon Snack You Would Actually Eat

Ask first.
Left undirected, the afternoon delivery tends to default to sweets. If you would rather have cheese and charcuterie, shrimp cocktail, hummus and vegetables, or something savory, say so early.
Ask whether your preference can be made a standing request. Butler availability and selections may vary by ship and sailing, so treat a yes as a kindness rather than a guarantee.
5. The Fridge Stocked With What You Actually Drink
Possible charge.
Sodas, sparkling water, and mixers are not complimentary in every Haven suite. Some top suite categories include them, while other guests may need an applicable beverage package or pay the normal charge.
Ask whether your butler can arrange your preferred beverages and what, if anything, would be charged based on your suite category and beverage package. Norwegian’s room service FAQ also notes a 20 percent gratuity and beverage service charge on non-complimentary beverages.
6. Coffee and Tea Set Up the Way You Take It
Included.
Haven suites come with a coffee maker, and your butler can generally keep it stocked, bring proper mugs rather than the small cups, and arrange tea service. If you would rather have the counter space than the machine, ask about removing it and having coffee delivered instead.
7. A Kids’ Plate at 3:00 pm or a Late Night Snack After the Show
Included.
Two different problems, one conversation. Something at 3:00pm prevents the pre-dinner meltdown that ruins an otherwise excellent day. Something waiting after the evening show prevents the late-night phone call.
Both are worth raising on day one to see whether they can be set as standing requests. This is also one of the more useful arrangements on a multigenerational or group cruise, where somebody is always hungry at the wrong time.
Suite Comfort: The Setup Requests
8. Extra Pillows From the Pillow Menu

Included.
Norwegian’s suites offer a pillow menu and your butler is generally the person who brings the pillows. Firm, soft and memory foam options are typically available, though selection can vary by ship.
Ask on day one rather than at 11:00pm on night three, when you have already had two poor nights of sleep.
9. Ice Twice a Day, With Proper Glassware
Included.
A small request with a disproportionate payoff. Ice delivered mid-morning and again in the late afternoon, plus proper glassware rather than plastic tumblers, makes the balcony considerably more civilized.
Ask whether a twice-daily delivery can be set as a standing request.ur balcony into an actual bar.
10. The Minibar Emptied
IIncluded.
If you brought your own wine, sparkling water or anything else that needs chilling, ask your butler about clearing the minibar. You get the space, and you remove the risk of somebody in your party absent-mindedly opening something that bills to the account.
Twenty-five is a lot to remember. The Request Finder page fits on one screenshot.
11. Robes, Slippers and Extra Towels in the Right Sizes
Ask first.
If the robes in the closet are not the right fit, ask whether another size is available. The same goes for slippers, pool towels and the extra bath towels that a family of four burns through by Tuesday. Availability varies by ship and by how full the sailing is.
12. Pressing for Whatever Lost the Suitcase Fight
Possible charge.
Everything you packed is wrinkled. That is physics, not a personal failing. Norwegian lists one complimentary pressing as an amenity for Owner’s Suites and Garden Villas, and other categories may be charged at the standard rate.
Ask your butler what your specific category includes, and confirm the price before handing anything over.
13. Unpacking on Day One and Packing on the Last Night
Ask first.
Unpacking and packing assistance is something worth discussing with your butler rather than assuming. Where it is offered, it is one of the more genuinely useful services on the list, particularly on the last night when everybody else on the ship is wrestling with a suitcase.
Raise it at the introduction and see what your butler suggests.
| What You Are Discussing | When to Raise It | Cost Status | The Honest Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra pillows from the pillow menu | Day one | Included | Selection can vary by ship. Ask early rather than at 11:00pm on night three. |
| Ice and glassware on a schedule | Day one | Included | Ask whether a twice daily delivery can be set as a standing request. |
| Minibar cleared for your own items | Day one | Included | Also removes the risk of somebody opening something that bills to the account. |
| Different robe size, slippers, extra towels | Anytime | Ask first | Availability varies by ship and by how full the sailing is. |
| Preferred afternoon snacks | Day one | Ask first | Ask whether it can be a standing request. Availability and selections may vary. |
| Preferred beverages in the suite fridge | Day one | Possible charge | Depends on suite category and beverage package. A 20% gratuity and beverage service charge applies to non-complimentary beverages. |
| Coffee and tea set up your way | Day one | Included | Includes swapping the machine out entirely if you would rather have the counter space. |
| Help unpacking and packing | Day one | Ask first | Worth raising at the introduction rather than assuming. Ask what your butler can offer. |
| Balcony breakfast with table service | Evening before | Included | Haven and Suites guests are not subject to the room service breakfast fee. Sea day mornings are easiest. |
| Specialty restaurant dinner in your suite | Same morning or earlier | Possible charge | Cover charge or a la carte pricing still applies. Availability varies by ship and venue. |
| In-suite dinner on embarkation evening | Shortly after boarding | Included | Discuss it with your butler after boarding, since you are not aboard the night before. Menu choices may be limited on day one. |
| Wake up call with coffee delivered | Evening before | Included | Built for port mornings and early starts. |
| Early in-suite breakfast before an excursion | Evening before | Included | Eat aboard. Agricultural and customs rules at many ports restrict carrying fresh food ashore. |
| Rush press before dinner | Same day | Possible charge | Depends on suite category and service requested. Norwegian lists one complimentary pressing for Owner’s Suites and Garden Villas. Confirm the price first. |
| Stain, broken zipper or missing item | Anytime | Ask first | The butler’s assistance is included. Laundry, repairs, replacements and retail purchases may not be. |
| Sparkling wine chilled for one evening | Evening before | Possible charge | Depends on suite category and beverage package. Confirm before you say yes. |
| Wine you brought aboard, chilled and served | Evening before | Possible charge | Norwegian’s corkage fee applies whether you open it in a restaurant or in your suite. Check the current policy before packing. |
| Birthday or anniversary cake and setup | Day one or earlier | Possible charge | Several celebration items are purchasable rather than automatic. A 20% gratuity and beverage service charge applies to special occasion items. |
| Proposal or vow renewal | Before you sail | Possible charge | A formal vow renewal usually involves an onboard ceremony package and other departments. Start with your travel advisor. |
| Food allergies and medical dietary needs | 45+ days before sailing | Ask first | File with Norwegian’s Access Desk at least 45 days out. Your butler helps coordinate in-suite service but is not the safeguard. |
Celebrations: The Requests That End Up in the Photos
Everything in this section falls into the same bucket: requests your butler may help coordinate, subject to availability, ship policies and additional charges. Norwegian’s room service FAQ specifically notes that a 20 percent gratuity and beverage service charge applies to special occasion items.
14. A Cake and Setup for a Birthday or Anniversary
Possible charge.
Cakes, decorations and suite setups are things your butler can often help coordinate, and several of them are purchasable items rather than automatic inclusions.
Mention the occasion at the start of the cruise rather than the morning of, and ask what is complimentary, what is available for purchase, and what needs to be ordered through another department.

15. Sparkling Wine Chilled for One Specific Night
Possible charge.
One night, one bucket, waiting when you get back from dinner. Whether the bottle itself is complimentary depends entirely on your suite category, your beverage package and what you are asking for, so confirm before you say yes.
16. A Proposal or Vow Renewal Staged on the Balcony
Possible charge.
This is the one people most often assume a butler simply handles. In practice, a formal vow renewal usually involves an onboard ceremony package and other departments, and elaborate proposal setups may involve purchasable items.
Start the conversation with your travel advisor before you sail so the right teams are involved, then confirm the details with your butler on day one. If you are planning a milestone sailing around an occasion like this, the itinerary matters as much as the setup, and our guide to the best Mediterranean cruise lines for first-timers covers which lines handle occasions well.
17. A Tidy, Photo Ready Suite or Balcony
Included.
Adjacent to the above and underused. A cleared balcony table, glasses set out, no service trays in the frame, before the good light at 5:30pm. Ask your butler to reset the space and you get the photo without doing the tidying.
Logistics and Small Emergencies
18. A Wake Up Call With Coffee Delivered
Included.
For port mornings and early starts. A knock with coffee already poured is a meaningfully better start than a phone alarm and a stumble to the coffee maker. Arrange it the evening before.
19. Wine You Brought Aboard, Chilled and Served
Possible charge.
Norwegian permits guests to bring wine aboard subject to its published corkage policy, and that corkage fee applies whether you open the bottle in a restaurant or in your suite. Your butler can chill it, store it and bring proper glassware.
Check the current policy before you pack, since allowances and fees change.
20. Help With a Stain, a Broken Zipper or a Missing Item
Ask first.
This is where butlers most reliably outperform expectations, and it is worth understanding what the help actually covers. Your butler’s assistance is included. The eventual solution may not be, because laundry, repairs, replacements and anything purchased from a shop onboard can carry a cost.
Ask, and ask what it will run, especially if the fix involves the ship’s retail or laundry operation.
21. A Rush Press Before Dinner
Possible charge.
Distinct from day-one pressing and worth knowing separately. Your butler can often expedite a single item faster than the standard laundry form allows.
Whether it is complimentary depends on your suite category, so confirm the price first. A full family laundry load still goes through the normal channel either way.
22. A Fast Route to the Right Department
Included.
Your butler cannot fix a billing dispute, book a shore excursion or manage a medical issue. What they can often do is get you to the person who can, quickly, instead of leaving you in a queue at guest services.
Use them as the fastest door into the ship’s org chart. That alone is worth the phone call.
The Ones Almost Nobody Thinks to Ask For
23. A Quiet In-Suite Lunch on a Port Day You Are Staying Aboard
Included.
Staying aboard while the ship empties out is one of the great underrated cruise moves. Ask about lunch in the suite that day. The ship is quiet, your butler is not stretched across a full deck of occupied suites, and the service is usually at its best.
24. An Early In-Suite Breakfast Before a Morning Excursion
Included.
If your excursion leaves before the Haven Restaurant opens, ask your butler the evening before about an early in-suite breakfast so you are not starting a long day on nothing.
One caution worth stating plainly: do not plan on carrying ship food ashore. Agricultural and customs rules at many ports restrict bringing fresh food off the vessel, and those rules are enforced at the gangway rather than negotiated with your butler.
25. In-Suite Coordination of Dietary Needs You Have Already Filed
Ask first.
If someone in your party has a food allergy or a medical diet, your butler can be genuinely helpful in carrying those requirements into in-suite orders. They are not, however, the safeguard.
Notify Norwegian first. The line’s dietary restrictions and food allergy guidance states that special dietary requests should be submitted at least 45 days before sailing and that requests made inside 45 days cannot be guaranteed. Work with the Access Desk and the ship’s dining team, and treat your butler as one coordinating link in that chain rather than the whole plan.
The 2 Things Not to Ask Your Haven Butler For

Anything That Happens Outside Your Suite
Shore excursions, specialty dining reservations, theater and show seating, priority tender tickets and disembarkation planning all belong to the Haven concierge. That is a different person with a different job.
This mix-up is a common reason guests come home saying their butler “was not that useful.” A week of asking the wrong person produces polite redirection instead of results. Inside the suite is generally the butler. Everywhere else is generally the concierge.
Anything That Belongs to Another Department Entirely
Spa bookings go through the spa. Casino questions go through the casino. Anything medical goes to the ship’s medical center immediately.
There is also a food safety line worth understanding. Cruise ship galleys operate under strict handling and temperature rules monitored by the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program, which is part of why a butler will serve you a properly plated meal but will not pack a cooler of buffet food for you to take ashore. That is not unhelpfulness. That is public health.
What All of This Costs

Butler service itself is included in every Haven suite category. What the butler brings is a separate question, and the honest answer is that it depends on the item, your suite category and your beverage package.
Per Norwegian’s official onboard service charge FAQ, the 2026 rate is $25.00 USD per person, per day for The Haven and suites, and $20.00 USD per person, per day for Club Balcony Suite and below. It applies to guests age three and older and can be prepaid up to 24 hours before sailing.
Service charge and room service policy details verified against Norwegian’s published FAQ pages on August 1, 2026.
That charge funds a broad pool of crew and does not go to your butler as a butler tip. Cruise crew across the industry work under wage frameworks set by the International Labour Organization’s Maritime Labour Convention, with tips layered on top.
What Haven Guests Actually Tip
Norwegian does not publish a butler tip rate, and anyone quoting one as official is guessing.
What we can tell you is what our own community reported. In our Haven at Sea community poll, 85 percent of respondents said they tipped their butler $20 to $29 per day. That number reflects the experience of Haven travelers who chose to answer a poll, not a Norwegian policy and not a requirement, and your own figure should scale honestly to how much of this list you actually used.
One free step that matters more than people realize: name your butler in your post-cruise survey. Naming your butler in the post-cruise survey gives Norwegian a written record of the service you appreciated and can be another meaningful form of recognition.
A Few Things Worth Packing
Three small items that make these conversations easier. None are required. I bring all three anyway.
Packing cubes. If you do end up discussing unpacking help, cubes make the job faster and mean your things end up organized the way you organize them. Shop packing cubes on Amazon
Cabin door magnets and celebration decorations. Norwegian’s suite doors are steel. If you are sailing for a birthday or an anniversary, bringing your own decor gives you a complimentary option alongside whatever the ship sells. Shop cruise cabin door magnets and decorations on Amazon
Wine bottle protector sleeves. If you are bringing wine aboard, these are the difference between a nice bottle and a suitcase that smells like a nice bottle. Check Norwegian’s current corkage policy before you pack. Shop wine bottle protector sleeves on Amazon
And one that is free: pack a passport book even if your itinerary technically allows a birth certificate. The U.S. State Department’s cruise ship travel guidance recommends every cruise passenger carry one in case an emergency requires flying home from a foreign port. For broader passenger rights and industry standards, Cruise Lines International Association is the recognized trade body.
Frequently Asked Questions About Haven Butler Requests
What are the best things to discuss with your Haven butler?
The most useful conversations are in-suite dining, preferred snacks and beverages, pillows and ice, and any occasion you are celebrating. Some of those are included and some involve a charge, which is exactly why they are worth discussing rather than assuming. Raise them at the day one introduction.
Is everything my Haven butler brings included in my fare?
No, and this is the most common Haven misunderstanding. Butler service is included with every Haven suite, but specialty dining charges, non-complimentary beverages, pressing in most categories, celebration items and corkage may still apply. Norwegian’s room service FAQ notes a 20 percent gratuity and beverage service charge on non-complimentary beverages and special occasion items.
Is it rude to ask your Haven butler for too much?
No, and butlers generally say they would rather be busy than idle. The service is included in your fare and many preferences can be set as standing requests. The one genuine courtesy is notice, because a request made with lead time is far easier to accommodate.
How much notice does a Haven butler need for a request?
Ice, pillows, towels and small fixes usually take minutes. In-suite dining and celebration arrangements benefit from as much lead time as you can give. Special dietary requests are different and go through Norwegian at least 45 days before you sail.
Can I ask my Haven butler to bring food from the specialty restaurants?
Often yes, and your butler can frequently arrange specialty dishes to be served in your suite. Cover charges or à la carte pricing still apply exactly as they would in the venue. Availability varies by ship, by restaurant and by how busy the evening is, so ask early and confirm the cost.
What can my Haven butler do for a birthday or anniversary?
Your butler may help coordinate a cake, decorations, chilled sparkling wine and a suite setup, subject to availability, ship policies and additional charges. Mention the occasion on day one rather than the morning of. Ask specifically what is complimentary and what is a purchasable item.
How much do Haven guests tip their butler?
Norwegian publishes no butler tip rate, so there is no official answer. In our Haven at Sea community poll, 85 percent of respondents reported tipping $20 to $29 per day. That reflects community responses rather than a policy, and most guests give one cash amount on the last full day.
What should you not ask your Haven butler for?
Skip anything outside your suite, since shore excursions, dining reservations, show seating and disembarkation belong to the Haven concierge. Spa, casino and medical questions belong to those departments. Your butler will usually point you the right way, but cannot do another department’s job for you
Final Thoughts
The Haven butler is one of the most generous and most underused parts of a Norwegian suite booking. The service is staffed by people who are genuinely good at their jobs, it is included in a fare you have already paid, and a lot of guests use a small fraction of it simply because they are not sure what is appropriate to ask.
The fix is not to ask for more. It is to ask better. Find out what your suite category includes, say what you actually like, give notice for anything involving a kitchen, and check the cost before you confirm something you assumed was free. That combination is what separates a good Haven week from an expensive surprise on the last morning.
So take the list. Have the conversation on day one. And if you are still not sure whether something is included, the correct move is always the same one: ask.
