Haven Butler vs. Concierge vs. Stateroom Steward: Who to Ask for What

Last updated: August 9, 2026 :: Written by Mike Nelson, Travel Advisor :: Reviewed by Sue Nelson, Travel Advisor

In the Haven butler vs. concierge comparison, the easiest rule of thumb is location. Your butler looks after what happens inside your suite. Your concierge looks after what happens everywhere else on the ship. Your stateroom steward is a third person entirely, and housekeeping belongs to them. There is real overlap between all three, and nobody minds if you ask the wrong one.

Key Takeaways: Haven Butler vs. Concierge vs. Steward

  • Three different people look after your Haven suite, not one. Most first-timers meet the butler, assume that person does everything, and never use the other two.
  • Inside the suite is generally the butler. Around the ship is generally the concierge. Housekeeping is the steward. Treat it as a rule of thumb, not a rulebook.
  • Butler service is included with every Haven suite, per Norwegian’s official Haven page. Included means the service, not always the item.
  • The Haven butler and concierge are not included in the daily onboard service charge. Guests who wish to recognize their service tip them separately, at their own discretion. Norwegian does not publish a required gratuity amount for either position.
  • Your stateroom steward is supported by the daily service charge, which is $25.00 per person, per day for The Haven and suites in 2026.
  • In our Haven at Sea community poll, 85 percent of respondents tipped their butler $20 to $29 per day. That is community data from our members, not an official Norwegian recommendation.
  • If you are ever unsure who to ask, just ask. You will not get in trouble for asking the wrong person, and the Haven team will point you in the right direction.

Sue and I sail Norwegian in The Haven, and of all the questions that come through our Haven at Sea community, the Haven butler vs. concierge question is the one that comes up most. It usually arrives phrased as some version of “I did not want to bother anybody, so I just called the front desk.”

I understand the instinct. But somewhere on that ship there was a butler and a concierge with nothing pressing to do, while a perfectly nice person sat on hold to ask about a dinner reservation.

So here is the whole thing, laid out the way I wish somebody had explained it to me before our first Haven cruise. Including the stateroom steward, who gets left out of almost every version of this article despite being the person in your suite twice a day. Still deciding whether to book? Quick Answers: Butler, Concierge or Steward

For voice search, skimmers, and anyone reading this in a boarding line.

What is the difference between a Haven butler and a concierge?

Your butler generally handles what happens inside your suite. Your concierge generally handles what happens outside it. Butlers cover food, drinks, pillows and celebrations. Concierges cover reservations, seating, excursions and logistics.

Who do I call for dinner reservations in The Haven?

Start with the concierge. Restaurant tables sit outside your suite, so they normally belong to the concierge, even when the restaurant is the Haven Restaurant itself. Your butler can bring that dinner to your suite instead.

Does the Haven butler clean your room?

Not usually, and this one surprises people. Daily cleaning, towels, trash and turndown normally belong to your stateroom steward, who is a separate crew member with a separate job.

Do I tip the butler and the concierge separately?

Yes. The daily onboard service charge does not include the Haven butler or concierge. Guests who want to recognize their service tip them separately, at their own discretion, and Norwegian publishes no required amount.

How do I reach my Haven butler?

Your butler will introduce themselves and leave a card with a direct extension. Most suites also have a labeled button on the phone. Text and app options vary by ship.

What does the Haven concierge do?

Your concierge handles the parts of your cruise that happen outside your suite. Dining reservations, show seating, shore excursions, priority tender tickets and disembarkation timing all sit with them.

The Three-Second Rule of Thumb

Here is the whole post in one line, because this is what you will actually remember on day four when you are damp, happy and holding a drink.

Inside your suite, start with the butler. Around the ship, start with the concierge. If it involves a vacuum, it is the steward.

That is a rule of thumb rather than a rulebook. There is genuine overlap depending on the request, the ship and the crew, and some things belong to other departments entirely. But it will point you at the right person the large majority of the time, which is all a rule of thumb needs to do.

Your Butler: Everything Inside the Suite

Your butler is the person who makes the suite feel like yours instead of like a very nice hotel room, and that only happens if they know what you like. We go deeper in what a Haven butler actually does.

NCL Haven butler setting up in-suite dining service in a Norwegian suite

Haven Butler Duties, in Plain English

In-suite dining is the headline. Your butler can usually arrange breakfast on the balcony, dinner from the main dining rooms, and often dishes from specialty restaurants brought to your suite. Cover charges still apply, because the butler carrying the plate does not waive the venue’s price.

Beyond food, butler territory generally covers snacks, coffee setup, stocking the fridge with what you actually drink, the pillow menu, ice, robes, small repairs and celebration setups. In some categories, unpacking and packing assistance may be offered too.

The most valuable thing we do is also the least glamorous. On day one we tell our butler what we drink, what we like to snack on, and which mornings we want coffee in the suite. Five minutes of conversation, and the rest of the week quietly arranges itself around the answer.

Is the Butler Included in The Haven?

Yes, as part of the fare. What is not automatically included is everything the butler might bring you. Non-complimentary beverages carry a 20 percent gratuity and beverage service charge, specialty cover charges apply, and celebration items may be billed.

One perk almost nobody knows about: Norwegian’s room service policy states that Haven and Suites guests are not subject to the room service convenience charge that applies elsewhere on the ship.

How to Contact Your Haven Butler

Your butler introduces themselves shortly after you board and leaves a card with a direct extension. Many ships also have a labeled butler button on the suite phone. Some crews use a messaging app, some prefer a note on the desk. Ask which they prefer on day one and use that channel all week. There is no universal Haven butler phone number across the fleet, since it is assigned per suite, per sailing.

What Usually Falls Outside Your Butler’s Lane

Spa treatments would normally be booked through the spa, anything medical goes to the medical center, and reservations would generally be handled by the concierge. None of that is a hard wall. A good butler will often make the call on your behalf as a courtesy. It just means the answer comes faster if you start with the right person.

Dietary requirements are the one genuine deadline. Norwegian asks that requests go through the Access Desk at least 45 days before sailing, per its dietary requirements page. Inside 45 days, requests cannot be guaranteed.

Your Concierge: Everything Around the Ship

This is the role most guests underuse, usually because they never meet the concierge in person and therefore forget the concierge exists. It is the one habit I would most like first-timers to change.

The Haven concierge desk on a Norwegian cruise ship, where guests book dining and excursions

What Your Concierge Handles

Specialty dining reservations and changes. Reserved theater seating. Shore excursion bookings and priority tender tickets. Priority embarkation and disembarkation. Onboard account questions that would otherwise mean standing in a line.

Your concierge is also who to call when something has gone sideways in a way that involves another department, because they have internal contacts you do not.

Where to Find the Haven Concierge Desk

On most ships the Haven concierge desk sits in or beside the Haven Lounge or courtyard, with hours posted on the first day. There is also a phone extension, which is the faster option when you are already at the pool realizing you forgot to book dinner.

Ask Early, and Ask Anyway

The earlier you ask, the more opportunity your concierge has to help. That is the honest version. A concierge cannot conjure a table that does not exist, and I would be doing you no favors by suggesting otherwise. What they can do is work a waitlist, watch for cancellations, and know which night the popular venue tends to open up.

Sue and I have had a concierge come back to us days later with something we had written off, and that only happened because we mentioned it early. So mention it on day one. The worst outcome is a no, delivered pleasantly, by somebody who is glad you asked.

Haven Concierge vs Butler: The Five Requests People Route Wrong

These are the ones we see mixed up most often in our Haven at Sea community.

  1. A table at the Haven Restaurant. Concierge, not butler. The butler can bring that meal to your suite instead.
  2. Theater seating for the big production show. Concierge. Ask on day one, not ninety seconds before curtain.
  3. A full bag of laundry. Steward, using Norwegian’s standard laundry form. The butler handles pressing questions in categories where pressing is offered.
  4. Priority tender tickets. Concierge. This is one of the most tangible Haven perks and one of the most forgotten.
  5. Extra towels at 10 pm. Steward if they are still on duty, butler if they are not. Either way, someone will sort it out.

The NCL Stateroom Steward: The Role Everyone Forgets

Your stateroom steward cleans the suite, refreshes towels, handles trash, does turndown, and quietly keeps the whole thing looking like the photos on the website. On many sailings you will barely see them, which is rather the point.

Stateroom steward completing turndown service in an NCL Haven suite

Here is the part worth knowing. Your steward is supported by Norwegian’s onboard service charge, which the line describes as funding a crew compensation program covering stateroom stewards and complimentary restaurant staff, per its . The Haven butler and concierge are not included in that charge, and that single distinction explains the entire tipping structure of a Haven cruise.

If you keep missing your steward, leave a note or ask your butler to pass the message along. It works, and nobody finds it odd.

A dietary requirement or serious allergy Access Desk Ask first Norwegian asks for dietary requests at least 45 days before sailing. Inside 45 days, requests cannot be guaranteed.
A stain, a broken item, a small emergency Either One Ask first Start with whoever you see first. This is the category where the Haven team most reliably outperforms expectations.
Spa treatments and massages Spa Possible charge Normally booked directly with the spa. Your butler will often make the call as a courtesy.
Anything medical Medical Center Possible charge Go straight there. Your butler will help you get there quickly, and the care itself is a separate department.
A billing question on your onboard account Concierge Included The concierge can usually route it to Guest Services faster than standing in the line yourself.
Coffee and espresso setup in the suite Butler Ask first Machine type and pod selection vary by ship and suite category. Tell your butler how you take it on day one.
Bringing a non-Haven guest into the Haven Concierge Ask first Policy varies by ship, venue and sailing. Ask the concierge rather than assuming either answer.
💡 The three-second rule of thumb: inside your suite, start with the butler. Around the ship, start with the concierge. If it involves a vacuum, it is the steward. And if you are ever unsure who to ask, just ask. You will not get in trouble for asking the wrong person, and the Haven team will point you in the right direction.
Who Gets Tipped, and Why It Differs
Butler
Not included in the daily onboard service charge. Guests who wish to recognize their service tip separately, at their own discretion. In our Haven at Sea community poll, 85 percent of respondents tipped $20 to $29 per day. That is Haven at Sea member data, not an official Norwegian recommendation.
Concierge
Also not included in the daily onboard service charge, and tipped separately from the butler. Norwegian does not publish a required amount. Most guests scale it to how much they actually used the concierge.
Steward
Supported by the $25.00 per person, per day onboard service charge for The Haven and suites, which funds a crew compensation program. Anything additional is optional recognition rather than an expectation.

Who to Tip in The Haven

Tipping is where the three roles diverge most clearly, so it is worth being precise. Norwegian’s 2026 onboard service charge is $25.00 per person, per day for The Haven and suites, and $20.00 for Club Balcony Suite and below, for guests three and older. It is prepayable up to 24 hours before sailing and refundable if you cancel. Our what’s included in The Haven post breaks the numbers down further.

Do You Tip the Haven Butler and Concierge Separately?

Yes. The Haven butler and concierge are not included in the daily onboard service charge. Guests who wish to recognize their service tip them separately, at their own discretion. Norwegian does not publish a required gratuity amount for either position.

Separately from each other, too, rather than one envelope split between them.

How Much to Tip the Haven Concierge

Because there is no published rate, anything you read is a convention rather than a policy. The Cruise Lines International Association says only that shipboard personnel may be tipped for special service, at your discretion.

What we can offer is real numbers from real Haven guests. In our Haven at Sea community poll, 85 percent of respondents tipped their butler $20 to $29 per day. That is what our members reported doing, not a Norwegian recommendation and not what you “should” tip. Concierge amounts tend to run lower and scale with how much you actually used them, which for some guests is constantly and for others is twice.

NCL Room Steward Tipping

Your steward is already supported by the daily service charge. Anything additional is optional recognition rather than an expectation, and plenty of guests do offer something at the end of a great week.

One practical note: cash is easier than intent. Get small bills before you sail, because the onboard options for breaking a hundred are limited and mildly embarrassing.

You Are Not Going to Bother Anyone

A lot of first-time Haven guests spend the week worried they are being a nuisance. They hesitate to call the butler, talk themselves out of the concierge, and decide a question sounds silly before they ask it. On a cruise they saved a year for.

You are not bothering anybody. Looking after you is the job, and a Haven team with no direction has no way to make your week feel personal.

And if you are ever unsure who to ask, just ask. You are not going to get in trouble for asking the wrong person. The Haven team will point you in the right direction, usually before you have finished the sentence.

A Few Small Things That Help

Not required. These just remove friction.

  • Small bills for tipping. A simple cash envelope set makes end-of-cruise tipping a two-minute job instead of a scavenger hunt.
  • A magnetic notepad for the suite door. Cruise cabin walls are steel, and a magnetic notepad and pen is the easiest way to leave your steward a note when your schedules never line up. And this one rolls up to make packing it easy.
  • Over-the-door organizer. An over-the-door cruise organizer keeps the small stuff off every flat surface, which makes your steward’s job faster and your suite look better.

Does Every Ship’s Haven Staff Work the Same Way?

The Haven courtyard and pool complex on a Norwegian Prima class ship

No, and this caveat saves a lot of disappointment. On the Prima and Breakaway Plus ships, the Haven is a full enclosed complex with its own restaurant, lounge, courtyard and a concierge desk you walk past daily. On older ships including the Norwegian Pearl, Jade, Jewel and Gem, Haven-style suites exist without that enclosed complex, so the concierge experience looks different and some amenities are not there at all.

Category matters too. Norwegian lists one complimentary pressing for Owner’s Suites and Garden Villas, and other categories may be charged. Our Haven suites explained post covers which category gets what. When in doubt, ask on day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should I ask for extra towels, the butler or the steward?

Towels normally belong to your stateroom steward. If the steward is off duty and you need something right away, your butler will generally take care of it rather than send you away. Ask whoever you can reach.

Can the concierge get me into a sold-out specialty restaurant?

Sometimes, though nobody can promise it. Concierges can work a waitlist and watch for cancellations, which happen constantly. Ask on day one rather than the night of, because early notice is what gives them room to help.

Does the Haven concierge handle shore excursions and disembarkation?

Yes to both. The concierge books and changes shore excursions, arranges priority tender tickets in tender ports, and coordinates Haven priority disembarkation at the end of the cruise. If your flight time is tight, the concierge is the person who can help work around it.

Is the daily service charge my tip for the butler and concierge?

No. The Haven butler and concierge are not included in the daily onboard service charge. Guests who wish to recognize their service tip them separately, at their own discretion, and Norwegian does not publish a required amount.

What happens if my butler is not responding?

First check whether you are using the channel they prefer, since some butlers work mainly by phone and others by message. If it continues, the Haven concierge can escalate internally. Butlers cover multiple suites and occasionally have a genuinely impossible hour.

Do smaller ships without a full Haven still have a concierge?

Suite guests on ships without the enclosed Haven complex generally still receive concierge service, though the experience differs and there may be no dedicated desk. Amenities and access vary by ship and suite category. Confirm the details for your specific booking.

Can I ask my butler to book a spa appointment?

Spa bookings would normally go through the spa directly. Your butler can point you there and will often make a call on your behalf as a courtesy. The booking, availability and pricing all live with the spa.

Does every ship’s Haven staff work the same way?

No. The Haven varies by ship class, and older ships including the Norwegian Pearl, Jade, Jewel and Gem offer Haven-style suites without the full enclosed Haven complex found on newer ships. Staffing, amenities and access differ accordingly. Always confirm the details for your specific ship and suite category.

How much should I tip my Haven butler?

There is no required amount, and Norwegian does not publish one. In our Haven at Sea community poll, 85 percent of respondents tipped their butler $20 to $29 per day, which is our members’ real-world data rather than an official recommendation. Tip at your discretion, based on the service you receive.

Final Thoughts

Do not spend your first Haven cruise worrying about whether you are asking the right person.

If you need something inside your suite, start with your butler. If you need help somewhere around the ship, start with the concierge. If it is housekeeping, your steward is your person.

And if you are still not sure? Just ask.

One of the reasons we created Haven at Sea was that I never wanted someone preparing for their first Haven cruise to feel uncomfortable asking a simple question. The same idea applies once you are onboard.

You paid for the Haven experience. Let the Haven team help you experience it.

The Request Finder turns this into a lookup you can screenshot.

Inclusions, fees and staffing vary by ship, suite category and sailing, and are subject to change. Confirm the details for your specific booking before you sail.
